Nope, it's false.

The tiny number symbol found on most plastic items does not mean an item is recyclable.  

That symbol identifies the type of plastic resin an item is made from, not its recyclability. The shape and size of an item are also important considerations.

In Santa Monica, hard plastic containers made from #1, #2, and #5 plastics are recyclable; think bottles, jugs, jars, and tubs.  Just ensure they're empty and reattach their caps before recycling.
