You don't need a yard to compost in Chicago, that's what compost services are for!
Basically, there are two kinds of compost services that residents can subscribe to at home: shared neighborhood compost bins and door-to-door services. Both provide high convenience for a reasonable cost, most start at about $10 per month.
Door-to-door services generally provide 5-gallon buckets with tight-fitting lids to hold your food scraps. Costs will vary depending upon how frequently you need pickup.
Community compost bins involve much larger bins that are placed in a publically accessible location and locked. Once you subscribe to a specific bin, you're given the lock combination. The number of households and the size of the amount of compost collected will determine the cost.
